I Saw My Darling

                                                                 Frederick Morgan

I saw my darling on the street
walking home with clothes in her arms -
clothes from the cleaners - she walked along
past where the school was being built

on the next block. I called to her -
shouting\"Paula!\" out my window.
Shouted twice, three times. A black
construction worker grinned at me

from the unfinished roof. My dear one
turned, looked back the way she had passed,
then - as I called again - looked up,
saw me, and smiled, and called:\" I am comming!\"

Earlier on the telephone
we had spoken to a dying friend
in a suburban hospital.
A loving voice, but very faint.

God takes our friends in death. He gives
us pains to match (at least) our joys.
But gives, too, moments in each day
in which the heart may find itself

and learn its freedom in the vaster
gift of love in which it breathes.
Just as my heart is learning now -
my heart in which her smile still blooms.
